Abalone Information
Abalone is a mollusk, related to a sea snail. Abalones are large edible sea snails, gastropod mollusks of the Haliotidae species. Abalone shells are rounded or oval with a large dome towards one end. The shell has a row of respiratory pores. The muscular foot has strong suction power permitting the abalone to clamp tightly to rocky surfaces. An epipodium, a sensory structure and extension of the foot that bears tentacles, circles the foot and projects beyond the shell edge in the living abalone. Nine species of abalone occur in North America: black (Haliotis cracherodii), flat (Haliotis walallensis), blue abalone or green (Haliotis fulgens), pink/yellow (Haliotis corrugata), pinto (Haliotis kamtschatkana), red (Haliotis rufescens), threaded (Haliotis assimilis), Western Atlantic (Haliotis pourtalesii), and white (Haliotis sorenseni) abalone.
The Abalone shell is also popular for earrings, necklace, beads, pendant, ring, bracelet and all types of jewelry. The seashell is similar to the mother of pearl.
