History of Marinela
Marinela’s founders from the Bimbo company wondered if they could bake loads of fine cakes for everyone to enjoy anytime they wanted to, and this precise thought led them to create their famous bakery in 1954, with the name of Pabisa. A company that began to produce orange, strawberry and chocolate flavored cakes, they named this first brand of snacks “Keik” which was changed a year later to Marinela. The cakes were simple and not as popular as they are today, since people couldn’t enjoy them on a daily basis. Back in the day it wasn’t common to eat cake regularly, in Mexico it was customary to have cake only on special occasions, and so fancy bakery cakes were always preferred. Marinela first sold convenient bakery style cakes that were packaged with matches in order to light the candles. Individual sized cakes and slices were also produced and sold unwrapped, soon after they began to place them onto oblong paper bakery cups. These innovative cakes paved the way for Marinela’s most famous and beloved creations.
Gansito (Little Goose)
The Gansito was born to the Mexican Marinela factory during 1957, this tasty snack cake was one of the first three individually wrapped snack cakes that was produced by the famous bakery and that soon became a beloved product and an all time favorite in the country. The popular “Goose” that become a trademark of Marinela and decorates the snack cakes was designed by Alfonso Velasco who was one of Bimbo’s founders, as well as the famous tagline “Remember Me” (Recuerdame). The Gansitos are a similar to the American twinkies, except this snack cake is coated chocolate icing and sprinkles with an irresistible creamy and jelly filling. This fun dessert was first delivered with unique motor vans in Mexico called “Ganseras” and the salesmen were nicknamed “Ganseros”.
Since then Marinela has added to the fun and creativity of their bakery by creating and producing new treats such as the famous Pinguiinos that debuted in 1966 and resemble the Hostess cupcakes. Choco Roles and Polvorones made their first appearances in stores during 1972 and a year later Submarinos (the Mexican twinkies) were created. 1957 marked the production of their famous pineapple pies and Suavicremas. As the popularity of Marinela’s products spread throughout Mexico so did the factory and the first U.S. bakery was established in 1984 in the city of Houston, Texas. Today Marinela has become a household name and its sweet products are sold in many countries because kids and adults everywhere love Marinela’s irresistible and delicious snack cakes, cookies, crackers and pies.
